Deadline #8, HW #4, The Case against Coldplay
In this Case against Coldplay Jon Pareles expresses his opinion on Coldplay's music for trying too hard to be sad or sorrowful. He makes a comment about his songs wallowing happily in their unhappiness. He states the facts of Coldplays records sales all over the world and the amount of success and money they have brought in yet they are still so unhappy? He mentions Coldplays music being able to reach a wide variety of audiences such as high school girls, to hip hop producers that they can all "sympathize" with Chris Martin (lead singer) and his lyrics. Pareles feels so strongly against Martins lyrics he even says he wish he didn’t understand English when hearing their music. When describing Martin in this paper he says things like, he flaunts his humility or how he feels so bad for himself he leaves no room for you to feel sympathetic for him. Common objections he made against the bad was that they are fake, he mentions studio illusions and how they try to sound raw yet they are faultless to a fault. Pareles also talks about the context of Martins music and how in past albums he talks in first person and his experiences and in his newest album he talks more about you, and comparing things to “you”.

You did a good job analyzing the Pareles column. Not knowing anything about the group made it easier for me to critique the column. If I had preconceived ideas about Coldplay, I would probably react more strongly to the tone used by the author.
I agree with laceyariz. I've heard of the band name, but never heard the bands music. I think if I heard them, I could either agree or disagree with the author.
Either way, I don't feel the way he bashed on them was fair. He had negative thoughts about the band before writing the review, so it is pretty bias. It would be better for someone who doesn't mind them to be a better critique on this one.
jared has a good point, it was pretty bias and was very harsh in his writing. you did good on this analysis
